Tom Jones is playing in Brooklyn. No, the movie. The Alamo Draft House Cinema in Brooklyn will be screening the British New Wave classic on Tuesday evening at 6:30. Tony Richardson’s 1963 adaptation of the Fielding novel was nominated for ten academy awards, winning Best Picture and Best Director as well as Best Substantially Original Score (John Addison) and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium (John Osborne). Richardson successfully transfers the energy and wry wit of the Fielding classic to the screen.

The screening will be followed by a conversation with Garrett Oliver (Brewmaster, Brooklyn Brewery) and David Wondrich (Senior Drinks Columnist, The Daily Beast).

If you’re north of the city, you’re in luck. One of my all-time favorite musicals, On The Town (1949) will screen on March 10 at The Lafayette Theater in Suffern, N.Y. Also on the bill is the Laurel and Hardy short Two Tars (1928) with live organ accompaniment. And up Route 17 from Suffern, in Middletown, N.Y., The Paramount Theater will be showing the Gregory Peck/Audrey Hepburn romancer Roman Holiday (1953), also on March 10.

And, if you click on Where to Find the Flicks for this week, you’ll notice we have expanded our listings to include the New York Public Library free screenings in Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island.
